paper hiring practice. We care less about the degree / certifications, but care more about your actual ability to understand the task and perform it. Granted, depending on the task, we're required to ensure that the person has certain certifications (i.e. journeyman electrician) as dictated by national / customer standards. I have literally done job interviews where I give a person a drawing and schematic and have them explain it to me. After they explain it to me, I give them all the parts and have them put it together. If they can do it and do it within a certain time, maintaining neatness and quality, they are put on my short list.
